The Assistant Director of ADA Investigations Advising works in close collaboration with and under the supervision of the Director of Disability Support Services/ADA Compliance Officer while conducting and managing investigations of complaints of disability discrimination and related retaliation. The Assistant Director of ADA Investigations Advising is responsible for management of assigned cases to ensure a fair and prompt completion of the investigation process, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and will coordinate interim measures and accommodations with undergraduate and graduate students. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining accurate and thorough records and investigative files; assisting with the development and dissemination of educational materials and conducting outreach and training. The Assistant Director of ADA Investigations Advising will also provide support for the DSS Office in identifying, understanding, and integrating new guidance, law and best practices into the investigative process and training. The Assistant Director of ADA Investigations Advising manages DSS Intern program and the DSS Graduate Associate which serve to assist this role
This position collaborates with the director, to conduct and manage investigations of complaints of disability discrimination and related retaliation. To serve as the Faculty Compliance Advisor, responding to faculty questions and concerns as they relate to ensuring accessibility and providing reasonable accommodations to students registered with Disability Support Services (DSS). To work proactively to promote the principles of universal design and to foster a supportive environment for faculty to better their understanding of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and disability inclusion. To manage assigned cases to ensure fair and prompt completion of the investigation process, ensure compliance with all applicable laws, and coordinate interim measures and accommodations with undergraduate and graduate students. To maintain accurate and thorough records and investigative files. To assist with the development and dissemination of educational materials and to conduct outreach and training. To provide support for the DSS Office in identifying, understanding and integrating new guidance, law and best practices into the investigative process and training. To manage the DSS intern program and the DSS graduate associate.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides policy and program support to the Director of DSS/ADA Compliance Officer; conducts investigations from student complaints that may involve students, faculty, staff, affiliates, and non-affiliates.
- Develops an investigative plan for complaints in accordance with University policy, applicable laws, and recognized standards in the compliance arena.
- Conducts and manages prompt, impartial and thorough investigations in accordance with University policy.
- Gathers evidence, interviews parties and witnesses, compiles documentation, and prepares reports related to investigations.
- Manages initial and ongoing communication and official notices to parties involved in an investigation as well as campus administrators involved in the process.
- Writes comprehensive analytical fact-finding reports that demonstrate sound, balanced reasoning; clear articulation of facts and supporting evidence; and knowledge of applicable policies, rules, laws, and procedures.
- Maintains accurate records for each investigation.
- Assesses each complaint to identify and facilitate interim measures for all parties involved. Conducts research on policy/procedure issues and legal developments related to the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
- Facilitates education and response training to individuals, faculty, staff, students, and the community.
- Primary consultant to faculty/staff concerns, complaints, consultation requests.
- Serves as manager of campus education by coordinating, tracking, reporting for DSS online and in-person trainings for academic and non-academic departments.
- Provides Director of DSS/ADA Compliance Officer with weekly and monthly progress reports of active cases and authors the biannual DSS Faculty Staff Newsletter.
- Represents DSS/ ADA Compliance and the University at campus and community meetings and serves on related committees and panels as requested.
- Manages DSS ADA Internship Program.
- Collaborates with area law schools and related programs to hire and manage eligible students. Delegates tasks and manages DSS Graduate Associate as needed.
- Collaborates with Assistant Director to assess faculty needs, understanding, and level of satisfaction with DSS.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Annual Salary Range: $52,555.00 – $85,400.00
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling or a related field and three (3) years of related experience in an educational setting, preferably higher education, including experience facilitating training for large and small groups including student populations required. Juris Doctorate highly preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirements.
