Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham has an immediate position vacancy for a Contract Civil Staff Attorney

• Organizes, coordinates and manages their designated weekly desks (biweekly desks);


• Ensures that Help Desks have necessary volunteer staffing and material;


• Provides courteous, professional, and empathetic service to clients;

• Provides useful, accurate, knowledgeable, and timely support to attorney volunteers including,
but not limited to, scheduling of appointments, notification to clients regarding appointments,
form preparation, filing support, case preparation, settlement, and litigation support;

• Manages a caseload of active full representation extended representation cases assigned to
attorney volunteers by working closely with both clients and volunteers;

• Recruits (with support from the Volunteer Coordinator) and supervises attorney volunteers who
are handling extended representation cases;

• Maintain super-user knowledge of MyCase, VLB’s case management system to update/manage
cases, run tracking reports, and facilitate successful completion of cases;

• Works with social, civic and local organizations to develop partnerships, where appropriate, to
recruit clients and collaborate to provide legal help to low-income clients;

• Assessing legal issues on civil, probate and/or domestic relations issues, providing advice to
volunteer attorneys, and preparation of case summaries for submission and assignment to
volunteer attorneys;

• Follow-up and status update on all assigned cases;

• Legal research, when necessary, on all assigned cases before submission to volunteer
attorneys;

• Coordinating and discussing legal assessments with managing attorney when necessary;

• Strong legal skills, including issue-spotting, and the capacity to advocate assertively and
effectively;

• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds,
including communicating with our diverse constituencies – from law firm attorneys/partners to
potential clients;

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including a sense of compassion and sense of humor;

• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, and equally strong analytical skills;


• A team player with the ability to both lead and follow;


• Accessing and completing research and CLE courses in order to stay current on case law related
to cases that VLB covers;


• A high level of self-motivation and organization: ability to creatively problem-solve, and able to
prioritize and complete tasks efficiently;

• Assist with Expungement Clinics and Wills Clinics; and


• Other duties as assigned.
