Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham and Birmingham School of Law are collaborating to establish an Externship/Internship program involving opportunities for students to gain experience in either civil matters or domestic relations. To be considered for one of these positions, a student must have a minimum 2.75 GPA, successfully completed 54 hours of coursework, and must be in good standing with BSL.
Ejections and evictions will be the focus of the civil program. Interns and Externs both are required to work two to three days per week, two to three hours per day. Work includes assisting in Intake, Document Preparation, Clinic Preparation and other civil-related matters.
Domestic Interns/Externs will assist in Intake, Document Preparation, and Preparation for the Domestic Relations pro se Dockets. The Domestic Relations clinic is the first Wednesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The day is divided into two shifts: 9-12 and 1-4. In addition, the Domestic Relations pro se is held every 4th Friday of the month and will rotate among the Domestic Relations judges.
