BSL requires all students to schedule a minimum of three classes each term and attend classes year round, including the fall, spring, and summer terms. Classes are held on weeknights and on Saturdays. Beginning Fall 2026, students may only enter the program in Fall terms. Currently, BSL offers two degree tracks.
Traditional Track
The curriculum at Birmingham School of Law is designed to provide students with a strong base of legal knowledge, legal analysis skills, an understanding of the legal processes in our legal system, and the role of law in our society. Students must complete thirty-four (34) academic courses (twenty-seven (27) required courses, six (6) electives, and the Lawyering Fundamentals Course in order to earn sufficient credits for graduation and the award of a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
Executive Juris Doctor Only Track
The curriculum for the Executive Juris Doctor Only Track is very similar to the Traditional Track, designed to provide students with a strong base of legal knowledge and analytical skills. However, this is a non-licensure law degree and is not intended to provide students with the necessary foundation to sit for any attorney licensing examination. The Executive Juris Doctor Only Track (E.J.D. Track) differs in its required core academic courses. Students who enroll on this track will not receive certification from BSL to sit for any attorney licensing examination and while the student will receive an executive juris doctor degree, the student will not be allowed to provide legal advice or to be called an attorney, lawyer, and/or esquire.
Huntsville Pilot
Students who wish to enroll in either the Traditional Track or the Executive Juris Doctor Only Track now can attend in-person classes at our new Huntsville pilot program. These classes will meet Tuesday–Thursday, 6 p.m.– 8:45 p.m. Students are only in Huntsville for the first two terms and must attend classes in Birmingham after the first two terms. Every student in the Huntsville program will transfer to the Birmingham campus in their first Summer and remain at that campus until the end of the program. Due to very limited seating, we encourage interested students to view our application requirements and enroll as soon as possible.
