JULY 16, 2020 — Birmingham School of Law announced today the appointment of Scott Garrett to Dean. Garrett, an alumnus of the school and formerly its Associate Dean since 2017, succeeds James Bushnell, who stepped down July 15 after 13 years in the position to retire.
John Donaldson, member of the Board, had this to say: “The Board members are pleased that Scott Garrett is taking the position of Dean of the Birmingham School of Law. Scott is a graduate of BSOL and has served as a professor and most recently the Assistant Dean. In each role he has been an effective and tireless champion for the Birmingham School of Law and its mission and work. We are appreciative of his commitment to the school, we welcome him in this new role, and we look forward to his administration as Dean.”
“I am honored and excited to become Dean of BSL, and to have the opportunity to continue to improve upon the school’s history of providing a quality legal education to non-traditional students. We have a great program, and I look forward to our accomplishments over the coming years,” Garrett said.
In the midst of the current COVID pandemic, Garrett plans to focus first on the needs of students and faculty. “Faculty and students have done an exceptional job adapting to the online setting on short notice. Our immediate focus is to give them the resources they need to be successful in this challenging environment,” he said.
Garrett is thankful to the Board of Directors for his appointment as Dean. “I appreciate the Board’s confidence in naming me Dean of Birmingham School of Law,” he said. “I am especially grateful to Dean Bushnell, who put me on this path 12 years ago. I would not be in this position without his mentorship. I wish him the best.”
