Job Description

Summary: Under general supervision and guidance of the Superior Court Judge, the Law Clerk assists the judge in performing various legal work involving research and legal writing.  In addition, the Law Clerk performs other related work as assigned by the judge.  The Law Clerk’s work is reviewed by the Superior Court Judge to ensure adequacy and correctness.  The Law Clerk basically works from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, or as otherwise defined by the Chief Judge but no less than 40 hours per week.  Travel is required throughout the rural, five county Alapaha Judicial Circuit in South Georgia.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs legal research, analysis and writing, examines briefs, case records and legal authorities.
  • Writes memoranda; recommends disposition of cases, and under direct guidance of the judge, drafts decisions, orders, findings of fact and other legal documents for judge’s review and approval.
  • Examines and reviews the sufficiency of all Pro Se petitions, including petitions for divorce and child support worksheets prior to filing with the Clerks of Court.
  • Drafts responses to correspondence, motions and petitions from Defendants incarcerated in facilities through the state.
  • Provides technical review of proposed orders and requests to charge and alert judge to errors of fact and law.
  • Briefs judge on various legal issues and assist the judge while he or she is on the bench.
  • At the request of the Judge, travels to other counties within the circuit to attend various court proceedings.

In performing these duties, complete confidentiality and accuracy are required.  The judge relies upon the clerk’s research in reaching conclusions on pending cases.  Also, the judge relies on confidentiality in discussing performance of judicial duties and pending cases.

Salary              $4,416.67 per month                          $53,000.04 per year

Qualifications: Must be a law school graduate with experience performing legal research and writing.
